The 2023 Pathfinder Rock Creek is a new edition of Nissan’s well-known SUV with above-average off-road capabilities and brawny styling. It is an excellent-looking family vehicle on and off the pavement, with a comfortable and smooth ride and a versatile and spacious interior. Building on the mid-tier Pathfinder SV four-wheel drive trim, the Rock Creek has a durable tubular roof rack that looks sleek sitting atop a glossy, black roof. In fact, white bodywork could provide a bold contrast from the black trim components. It also has a unique blacked-out front end, standard LED fog lights, and Rock Creek emblems on the liftgate and front doors.
A Quality Engine
Like other current Pathfinders, there is a 3.5-liter direct-injected V-6 engine under the hood, even though the Rock Creek receives a slight horsepower and torque boost to 295 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque compared to 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque in other trims. Paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and an intelligent four-wheel drive system, it provides plentiful acceleration and passing power on-road and the power necessary to perform well on rocks and sand. Moreover, Nissan supplies the Rock Creek with an enhanced transmission cooler, which helps keep systems operating dependably on longer off-road rides over rugged terrain.
The Drive
The Rock Creek runs on 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels with an imitation Beadlock aesthetic, while the rims are encased in all-terrain tires. Those rugged tires provide extra traction on rough trails, offering added protection from rocks and other off-road risks. They add a tad bit of noise on paved roads, but the cabin of the Pathfinder is very well insulated from vibration and sound. Furthermore, seven available drive modes exist for several driving conditions and terrain. These modes include the following:
- Standard
- Eco
- Sport
- Tow
- Mud/Rut
- Sand
- Snow
Although the test drive was mainly limited to Standard and Sand, the Rock Creek trim did a splendid job adapting to numerous situations. Like all Pathfinders, this trim benefits from an independent front and multi-link rear suspension, providing a controlled and comfortable ride. The Rock Creek’s suspension has been specifically tuned for off-roading, but not too aggressively, so it still contributes to enjoyment in urban environments and on the highway. The front and rear stabilizer bars and well-sorted power steering system help the Pathfinder handle more like a car than a spacious, 3-row SUV.
The Cabin
Nissan outfits the Pathfinder Rock Creek with sturdy faux leather seats furnished with orange stitching and Rock Creek logo embroidery. Nissan displays some of the most supportive seating in the automotive industry, which lives up to that high quality. They are exceptional on long road trips and offer superb padding and isolation when riding on challenging trails. The SUV’s styling is tactfully lush, with a sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel and gunmetal trim, which matches the sensible stitched trim on the doors, center console, armrest, and dash. Second-row passengers have pleasantly wide captain’s chairs with fold-down arms and a removable center console with cupholders.
Furthermore, Nissan’s touchscreen infotainment system is user-friendly and straightforward to navigate. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard, while the availability of a 360-degree camera is a helpful tool when doing complex maneuvers like backing up or parking in a tight spot. In addition, the tactile responsiveness of relying on actual buttons to control settings such as fan speed is worthy of recognition.
